NYCTAF: Saturday Symposium

March 25 @ 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

| Free

1:10-1:50 – Questioning Identity, Questioning Authority

Explanation: The questioning of identity and authority are two themes that run throughout YA literature, often with profound overlap. On this panel, we’ll talk about the relation between the two, and how they play out in the authors’ new novels.

1:50-2:30 – The Three-Minute Pitch: High Concept Mashups

Explanation: The day’s creative panel. Ahead of time, authors will be given two “high concept” reference points – and will have to develop a YA pitch where they meet each other. For example – “It’s Taylor Swift meets Godzilla!” or “It’s The Red Queen meets Free Willy!” Authors have three minutes to convince the crowd it’s a book worth reading. (And to make them laugh. Repeatedly, if possible.)

2:30-3:15 – Voicing the Pain Inside

Explanation: Pain, especially springing from a mental health issue, is a very hard and very important thing for authors to convey in YA. These authors have all taken different approaches to draw the pain of their characters or subjects with honesty and effect. In this conversation, we’ll talk about how this is done, and what it’s like for an author to delve to these depths.

3:25-4:10 – Brave New Worlds, Same Old Problems

Explanation: Especially in times of rapid change and rapid concern about the world’s direction, speculative fiction can draw images of the future that draw heavily on the lessons of the past and the dilemmas of the present. The authors on this panel will discuss how this is done – where they draw their inspiration, and how they make speculation matter.
